The Flight- I mean plight- of the women in Song of Solomon

“She arrived with suitcases, a green sack, a full-grown daughter, and a granddaughter, and found her brother truculent, inhospitable, embarrassed and unforgiving. Pilate would have moved on immediately except for her brother's wife, who was dying of lovelessness then, and seemed to be dying of it now as she sat at the table across from her sister-in-law listening to her life story...” (Morrison 151).

Write a well constructed essay that explains how the characterization of both women in the passage above and throughout chapter 5 provides insight to the plight of women in this story and the irony that struggle creates. May use your book and make sure you do not limit yourself to just this passage. Do not summarize their respective lives, instead look at the bigger picture to shape your analysis.
